Tanker truck pierced by rebar; spills 5,000 litres of gasoline on Calgary street

CALGARY - Emergency crews and police are dealing with a major fuel leak in a northeast Calgary industrial area.

Officials say a tanker truck was pierced by a piece of rebar and spilled about 5,000 litres of gasoline into the street.

Most of the fuel went down the storm drain, and vacuum trucks, sand and foam are being used to clean up the rest.

Calgary Water Services says no drinking water has been contaminated.

The spill caused road closures, transit disruptions and the evacuation of several businesses.

Paramedics say the driver was covered in fuel and taken to hospital.
