Mexican police arrest man who allegedly beat woman to death, claiming she cast spell on him

MEXICO CITY - Prosecutors in western Mexico say a 78-year-old man has been arrested and charged with homicide for allegedly killing a woman he claimed cast a spell on him.

The Attorney General's Office in western Michoacan state says Santiago Iniguez is charged with beating to death Modesta Navarro Nieves with a club, and severely injuring her husband.

The office said Thursday the attack occurred in 1998 in a rural mountain hamlet. Iniguez then fled and only recently returned to the community.

Witnesses say Iniguez burst into the couple's home and accused Navarro Nieves of having cast a spell on him, and began beating her.

In July 2008, a woman was arrested in central Mexico for allegedly killing a woman she thought has bewitched her.
